UN Chinese Language Day is observed annually on April 20 to promote equal usage of all six of the organization’s official working languages and to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity. The date of April 20 was chosen as Chinese Language Day to honor Cangjie, a legendary figure in Chinese folklore who is said to be the founder of Chinese characters.
In celebration of this day, the Addis Ababa University (AAU) and the Confucius Institute of AAU in Ethiopia celebrated the approaching United Nations Chinese Language Day on Friday with a variety of cultural activities aimed at promoting the Chinese language and culture.
Chinese language students from the university demonstrated numerous aspects of Chinese culture and language, including calligraphy, paper-cutting, Chinese traditional costumes, and Peking Opera facial masks, as part of a series of cultural activities. Members of the 23rd Chinese medical team to Ethiopia also demonstrated traditional Chinese medicine including acupuncture and cupping to a crowd of the AAU community.
With the largest volume of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Ethiopia coming from China in 2019/2020, and Ethiopian-Chinese relation growing stronger by the year and by the sector, it bodes well for Ethiopia’s general public and students to get more acquainted with the Chinese language and culture.
