The Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Programme (SIARP) will host a High-Level Multi-Stakeholder Continental Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on February 15-17th, 2023, to discuss the progress made in fighting gender-based violence and other harmful practices in Africa over the past three years. The summit will bring together participants from across Africa, including representatives from Member States, Regional Economic Communities, UN Agencies, and Development Partners.

The three-day summit will feature interactive sessions such as World Cafes, Storytelling, and Networking, where participants will share their experiences and insights on ending violence, harmful practices, and promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights in the region. The summit is organized by the UN Women Liaison Office to the African Union (AU) and UNECA, in cooperation with the African Union Commission’s Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate and the support of the Spotlight Initiative.

At the end of the summit, CSOs will draft key recommendations for the African Union Commission, governments, donors, and researchers on how to effectively end gender-based violence in Africa. The summit will take place on the sidelines of the African Union Heads of Assembly Summit on February 18-19, which will provide an opportunity for the participants to share their recommendations with key decision-makers in the region.

The summit is an important step in leveraging the work of CSOs already involved in the SIARP, building on their experiences and learnings over the last three years. It aims to promote networking between CSOs and other relevant actors, including Member States and UN agencies, to effectively address the issue of gender-based violence in Africa.
