The Ethiopian Agriculture Authority reported that the country earned more than 41 million USD from meat exports over the last five months.
According to the Authority, the country is attempting to export 28 tons of meat to the international market during the current Ethiopian fiscal year, which began on July 7, 2022. The country has the ability to export 200,000 tons of meat to the international market each year.
Dr. Ayalew Shumete, Director of Export Abattoir Inspection and Certification at the Ethiopian Agriculture Authority told ENA that the country earned 41.8 million USD by exporting 5,900 tons of meat to the international market during the first five months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year.
With 60 million cattle, Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in Africa and the fifth largest in the world, according to the World Bank. The livestock sector accounts for around one-fifth of the country’s economy and close to 10% of its exports.
The main markets for Ethiopian meat products are Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Furthermore, the Director stated that efforts are being made to establish meat markets in China, Indonesia, and European countries.
According to the Director, Ethiopia is attempting to export 28 tons of meat and earn more than $150 million USD during the current fiscal year.
