Over 95.8-million-birr worth of contraband items were seized last week by the Ethiopian Customs Commission. From this, 43.8-million-birr worth of inward contraband, and more than 51.9-million-birr worth outward contraband items have been seized.
The Jijiga, Dire Dawa and Hawassa branch offices are the main contenders for contraband smuggling, with 13.9 million, 11.8 million and over 6.5-million-birr worth of contraband items respectively. Among the items seized were gold, ammunition, electronics, coffee, medicine, cosmetics, weapons, khat, drugs and various national currencies.
