The Ministry of Mines has inked an agreement with Netherland, Sewell & Associates, Inc. to perform a study on the potential of Ethiopia’s petroleum and natural gas resources.
According to the agreement, Netherland, Sewell & Associates, Inc. will conduct surveys and feasibility studies in Ogaden, Somali Region, based on previous explorations in a 3,500 square kilometer area in the region.
Takele Uma, Minister of Mines, Tracey Ann Jacobson, Chargé d’affaires of the United States Embassy in Addis Abeba, and representatives from Netherland, Sewell & Associates, Inc.attended the signing ceremony.
The study is expected to enable Ethiopia’s petroleum and natural gas resources to be utilized for fertilizer and energy projects, as well as to provide assurance to international investment institutions on the scale and type of oil and natural gas resources.
Furthermore, the worldwide recognition gained as a result of the study is expected to strengthen Ethiopia’s ability to recruit and negotiate investment in the sector.
