Over the last two years, the air freight industry has been a rare bright spot for airlines, with rates rising due to an increase in online shopping and pandemic-related supply chain disruptions fueling demand for cargo space. “The cargo business is robust for us, Ethiopian Airlines, and I would say it is a breadwinner in the group,” CEO Tewolde Gebremariam told a Dubai conference via video link.
Ethiopian Airlines, which is claimed to have managed the pandemic on its funds and without the need for bailouts, is now operating at about 70% of its pre-pandemic capacity and has offered employees salary raises and bonuses, said the CEO.
