In the 2020/21 fiscal year, Ethiopia’s banking industry processed a total of 225, 603,984 ATM transactions, of which 38,302,370 were inter-bank transactions offered by EthSwitch S.C.
In Ethiopia, the deployment of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) started in the late 2001.
Globally, some of latest ATM machines are comes with features like video-based banking and cradless transactions.
The first world ATM was set up in June 1967 on a street in Enfield, London at a branch of Barclays bank. A British inventor named John Shepherd-Barron is credited with its invention. Shepherd-Barron came up with the concept of a self-service cash dispenser in 1965 and his “eureka” moment was inspired by a machine dispensing chocolate bars. The machine allowed customers to withdraw a maximum of GBP10 at a time.
