In the Ethiopian fiscal year 2021-2022, which ended on July 7th, remittances from Ethiopians living abroad totaled 4.2 billion dollars in the Ethiopian fiscal year 2021–2021, which ended on July 7th. Mohammed Idris, deputy director of the Ethiopian Diaspora Agency, stated on Friday that remittances collected during the previous fiscal year were $200 million above the goal set for the period.

In the fiscal year 2020/2021, the Ethiopian diaspora remitted 3.6 billion US dollars. According to Ethiopia News Agency (ENA), the Ethiopia Diaspora agency was also able to gather investments from 1,800 members of the Ethiopian diaspora for the fiscal year 2021/2022 (2014 E.C). The deputy director also stated that members of the Ethiopian diaspora gave 28 million US dollars to reconstruct areas of the country damaged by both man-made and natural disasters during the just-finished fiscal year.

There are around 3 million people of Ethiopian origin worldwide, the majority of them residing in Southern Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.
