What is a Golden visa Exactly? Long-term residence visas in the UAE.
The UAE announced a permanent residency program in 2019 that allows foreigners to live, work, and study in the UAE without the need for a national sponsor and with full ownership of their businesses. This is the first scheme of its kind in the Gulf, where under the “Kafala” sponsorship system, foreigners are usually only granted temporary residence permits.
Investors, entrepreneurs, individuals with outstanding talents such as researchers, medical and scientific and knowledge professionals, and outstanding students are all eligible for the Golden Visa system, which provides them with long-term residency for 5 to 10 years.
Investors with a public investment of at least AED 10 million, whether in the form of an investment fund or a company, can apply for a 10-year visa. However, real estate must account for at least 60% of the total investment, and the amount invested must not be loaned or, in the case of assets, investors must take full ownership. In addition, the investor must be able to hold the investment for at least three years.
This 10-year golden visa can be extended to include business partners as long as each partner contributes AED 10 million. The long-term visa may also include the holder’s spouse and children, as well as an executive director and advisor. For the 5-year golden visa, the rules are very similar for investors, with the only difference being that the required investment amount is AED 5 million.
Foreigners wishing to establish their company in the United Arab Emirates can also apply for 5 years permanent residency through the Golden Business Visa scheme.
