In one of her first acts as British prime minister since her appointment on September 06, 2022, Elizabeth Truss picked Kwasi Kwarteng to manage the U.K. public finances, making him the highest-serving Black politician in British history.

Reportedly a radical free-marketeer and former government business spokesman, Kwarteng served as a Member of Parliament since 2010 and as the business secretary under Boris Johnson.

According to POLITICO, the new chancellor, a member of the conservative party, has ambitious plans to boost growth by reducing business regulation and taxes, all while attempting to address Britain’s cost-of-living crisis.

His selection means that the last four Conservative chancellors have all come from ethnic minority backgrounds. Sajid Javid, born to Pakistani parents, Rishi Sunak, of Indian descent, and Nadhim Zahawi, who fled Iraq with his parents when he was 11 years old, are Kwarteng’s immediate predecessors.
