Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (14 October 2022)

Prior to its suspension last week, passengers traveling to Ethiopia from Nigeria could easily obtain a visa on arrival (VOA) upon reaching Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. However, prospective travelers from Nigeria are now expected to get ET visas at its embassy in Abuja. A similar ban was placed on commuters from 41 other countries, Vanguard reports.

The federal government of Nigeria has begun talks with Ethiopia for the annulment of the new rule, whose enactment was not accompanied by an explanation. This decision, made just two weeks after Ethiopian Airlines was announced as the primary investor in Nigeria Air, raised eyebrows among stakeholders.

Hadi Sirika, Nigerian Minister of Aviation, reportedly emphasized that the cancellation was not unique to Nigeria alone and that several other nations were affected, too. According to him, the prohibition is unconnected to the relationship between Nigeria and Ethiopian airlines, or the new project jointly undertaken by them.
