As part of a more specific ruling on a post following the current war in Ethiopia, Facebook’s Oversight Board announced a judgment calling on the platform to launch an independent assessment of its involvement in escalating the danger of violence.

The Oversight Board suggested that Meta commissions an independent human rights due diligence assessment on how Facebook and Instagram have been used to spread hate speech and unverified rumors that heighten the risk of violence in Ethiopia and that its community standards include specific guidance on rumors during war and conflict.

“We are reviewing the board’s full decision and recommendations, and per the bylaws, we will respond within 30 days.” said Facebook spokesperson Jeffrey Gelman.
