The transaction of the New Telecommunications License issued to Safaricom Ethiopia (Global Partnerships for Ethiopia) introducing the private sector as part of the telecoms liberalization project has been selected as a winner by Partnerships Awards, under Best Utilities Project Category (Waste/Energy/Water/Telecom), for the year 2022.
The Partnerships Awards are the industry’s biggest and most prestigious celebration of excellence in the industry. The Awards took place on Thursday 19 May, at the Hilton on Park Lane, London, United Kingdom, where the winners of the 2021 and 2022 Awards were announced. The judges recognized the huge impact of the project on the nation’s development and its communities through job creation as well as the enhanced telecommunications service. Diligence and transparency of the process were key for the recognition.
In June 2021, the Ethiopian Communications Authority reached a financial close with the Global Partnership for Ethiopia (made up of Safaricom, Vodafone Group, Vodacom Group, CDC Group PLC and Sumitomo Corporation) on the nation’s first competitively tendered telecommunications license. The scheme will open up competition in telecoms, allowing greater internet usage, digital transformation, socio-economic growth, and inclusive prosperity.
The license promotes ongoing investments in the sector, with the operating consortium planning to invest a minimum of $8.5bn over the first 10 years of the license, making this the single largest foreign direct investment into Ethiopia in history.
For the first time in the world, the business case is entirely based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and will allow highspeed mobile penetration, thereby supporting education, agriculture, health, trade and industries across the vast country.
