Safaricom Ethiopia debuted its first data center in Ethiopia, less than a year after the Ethiopian Communications Authority granted the business the country’s first telecom operator license since Ethio Telecom. The opening of the data center in Addis Ababa is a big step forward for the Safaricom-led partnership as it works toward launching commercial operations in April.
The Ethiopian government has stated that it plans to allow the consortium to deliver digital financial services after creating a climate that promotes competition rather than monopolization by multinational businesses such as Safaricom. Safaricom plans to build two new data centers, one in Addis Ababa and the other in Adama, and more than 7,000 network towers to reach half of the population in the next five years.
