Tomorrow is the big day! United under the banner “My space, my right, my vote,” thousands of women in Ethiopia are set to take part in the 20th edition of the Women First 5km race tomorrow, Sunday, March 26, 2023. Organized by the Great Ethiopian Run (GER) and sponsored by Safaricom Ethiopia, the event aims to promote the empowerment of women.
As one of the biggest women-only runs in Africa, the Women First 5km race has grown into an event that recognizes the achievements of Ethiopia’s female athletes and promotes broader changes regarding the role of women in the country’s economic and social life. With over 15,000 runners expected to participate, this year’s race promises to be an exciting event that celebrates women’s accomplishments and advocates for their rights.
Double Olympic gold medalist Meseret Defar serves as the event’s ambassador, and the race traditionally highlights important social messages that focus on women’s empowerment. This year’s theme emphasizes women’s rights to occupy public spaces, have a say in the democratic process, and live without fear of violence and harassment.
Safaricom Ethiopia’s sponsorship of the Women First 5km race, which was announced earlier this year, will continue for the next three years. Along with other sponsors, including UNICEF Ethiopia, Sink Malt, Dashen Bank, and Ethio Post, the telecom operator will support this annual event that recognizes the achievements of Ethiopia’s female athletes and promotes broader changes regarding the role of women in the country’s economic and social life.
