The Confederation of African Football (CAF) organized the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, known as the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship reasons, is to be launched today in Cameron as the 33rd edition of the tournament.
CAF have increased the prize money on the eve of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations kickoff on Sunday and said all 52 matches will use Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
A CAF executive committee meeting in Douala, Cameroon on Friday resolved to increase the prize money for the Covid-19-delayed Nations Cup by a total US$1.850 million (ETB 192.5 million ).
Ethiopia, one of the founding nations of the Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF), placed in Group A alongside Cape Verde, Burkina Faso and hosts Cameroon.
The Walia Ibex will open their campaign against Cape Verde on tournament kicks off day January 9th at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde, before facing the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the same Stadium on January 13th in their second group match. They will play their last Group match against Burkina Faso on January 17th.
The new prize money for eventual champions of the competition is $5 million (ETB 250 million) – a $500,000 increase from the previous prize in the 2019 edition. The runners-up will earn $2.75/ETB 113.75 million (Increased amount – $250,000).
The semi-finalists will be paid $2.2 million (ETB 110 million), and the quarterfinalists will be paid $1.175 million (ETB 58.75 million), an increase amount of $200,000 and $175,000, respectively.
The new TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Prize Monies:
- Winner: USD5/ETB 225 million (an increase of USD 500 000)
- Runner-up: USD2.75/ ETB113.75 million (an increase of USD 250 000)
- Semi-Finalists: USD2.2/110 million (an increase of USD 200 000)
- Quarter-Finalists: USD1.175/ETB 58.75 million (an increase of USD 175 000)
CAF said, “For the first time in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, all 52 matches of the competition will use VAR,”.
