Timnit Gebru, a prominent Ethiopian-American artificial intelligence computer scientist, is launching an independent artificial intelligence research institute focused on the technology’s negative effects on marginalized groups, who often suffer disproportionately from AI systems but have less say in its development.
Her new organization, the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR), aims to record the harms while also developing a vision for AI applications that can benefit the same people. The MacArthur Foundation, Ford Foundation, Kapor Center, Open Society Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation contributed $3.7 million to DAIR. Timnit was let go from Google a year ago after writing a research article criticizing the company’s profitable AI work on huge language models, which can assist with conversational search inquiries.
