The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), the organization behind Wikipedia, has stated that it will no longer accept cryptocurrency donations. According to the WMF, it “has chosen to suspend direct acceptance of bitcoin as a mode of donation.” It also says it will shut its Bitpay account, which will prevent any future crypto contributions.

After an extended discussion with nearly 400 WMF members, the majority decided to eliminate crypto contributions. The environmental implications of Bitcoin, the risk of scams, and the fact that the WMF receives such a small amount of cryptocurrency donations compared to other forms of payment were some of the main arguments.

The WMF reports that bitcoin donations totaled $130,100.94 in 2021, accounting for only 0.08 percent of all contributions. Following the community decision, the WMF had an internal meeting and decided to end cryptocurrency donations.
